 Night Watching in Wiltshire: A Field Guide to the Unexplained During the height of the crop circle phenomenon — particularly through the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s — Wiltshire became the unofficial capital of night watching. When formations appeared in abundance across the Vale of Pewsey and the downs around Avebury, watchers positioned themselves at almost every vantage point imaginable. Car boots became makeshift observation posts. Thermos flasks steamed in the cool night air. Every rustle in the crops felt like a prelude to something extraordinary. These days, the landscape is quieter. Crop circle activity has shifted to other counties, partly because many Wiltshire farmers now cut formations as soon as they appear. But the tradition hasn’t died. A handful of seasoned watchers still venture out into the darkness, hoping — patiently, stubbornly — for that rare moment when the countryside reveals something it shouldn’t. Success is never guaranteed. Most nights are uneventful. But when something does happen — a light, a sound, a figure, a movement that defies easy explanation — it compensates for every cold, silent hour spent waiting. Night watching requires time, intent, good weather, and a willingness to accept disappointment. The best approach is to treat it as a pilgrimage: go for the ambience, the solitude, the ancient landscape, and the fresh country air. Anything else is a bonus.  The alleged chase took place in a field just off the West Kennet Avenue in 2009  On another occasion in 2010 a small alien looking being jumped in front of a night watcher.  A spectacle of orange lights - careful not to mistaken them for military flares. Behaviour of the lights should determine one or the other. Primary Hotspots West Kennet Avenue A factual anchor: West Kennet Avenue is a Neolithic stone avenue linking Avebury to The Sanctuary, and archaeological excavations have indeed uncovered human remains and shallow graves in the surrounding area. The place carries a long history of ritual significance — and, for many watchers, an uncanny atmosphere after dark. This stretch of land has produced some of the most persistent reports of unexplained activity: • Orange and white lights skimming low over the crops, sometimes moving with a speed or precision that witnesses struggle to explain. • Entity sightings, including the well‑known account of a female crop circle researcher who allegedly chased a small, humanoid figure through a field in 2009. According to her report, the being outran her and vanished into the crops. • A 2010 encounter, where a night watcher claimed a small, alien‑looking figure jumped out in front of them before darting away. The orange lights are often debated. Military flares are common in Wiltshire due to nearby training areas, but seasoned watchers insist that behaviour — movement patterns, duration, and silence — can distinguish one from the other. West Kennet Avenue has accumulated decades of such stories. The timing of events is unpredictable; there is no pattern, no reliable window. The only way to experience anything is to be there. It’s surprising, really, that TikTok explorers haven’t descended on the place more often. Yes, these accounts sound fantastical. But the landscape has a way of surprising people. You never know what a night out there might bring.  Reports of wolf like figures in South Field appearing in front of night watchers. Sometimes just the grunts can be heard. Alton Barnes – Alton Priors – South Field – East Field These areas form the heart of classic crop circle country. For years, East Field in particular was one of the most active and most watched locations in the world. A favourite vantage point used to be the silage pit overlooking East Field. From there, watchers could monitor: • Picked Hill • Woodborough Hill • Knapp Hill • Golden Ball Hill • Tawsmead Copse Police patrols occasionally stopped to ask what people were doing. Farmers sometimes asked watchers to move on. But the view was unmatched. Reports from this region include: • Wolf‑like figures appearing in South Field — sometimes only the shape, sometimes just the guttural grunts in the darkness. • Circle makers being chased out of fields by unknown forces. • Numerous UFO/UAP sightings, ranging from structured craft to fast‑moving lights. Silbury Hill Silbury Hill — the largest artificial prehistoric mound in Europe — has long been associated with folklore and unexplained phenomena. Historically, watchers climbed to the top for a panoramic view of the surrounding fields. Today, climbing the hill is restricted to protect its fragile structure, and fines are enforced. The best alternative is the West Kennet Long Barrow, which offers a sweeping view of Silbury Hill and the surrounding landscape. The barrow itself, being a Neolithic chambered tomb, adds its own layer of atmosphere to any night watch. Where Ley Lines Occur Ley lines are mapped all over the world, but some regions are especially famous: United Kingdom (the birthplace of the idea) • Stonehenge • Avebury • Glastonbury Tor • Silbury Hill • Rollright Stones These sites often appear on the same straight alignments in ley line maps. Europe • Mont Saint-Michel (France) • Aachen Cathedral (Germany) • The “Apollo–St. Michael Line” running from Ireland to Israel (a popular esoteric alignment) Worldwide • The Great Pyramid of Giza • Machu Picchu • Nazca Lines • Easter Island • Chichén Itzá These global alignments are part of what some call the Earth Energy Grid, though this remains speculative. Why People Find Ley Lines Compelling • Many ancient sites do align in straight lines—sometimes by chance, sometimes possibly by design. • These alignments often follow old trackways, ridges, or sightlines, which ancient people naturally used. • The idea of a hidden geometric structure beneath the landscape is deeply appealing and fuels both spiritual and paranormal interpretations. On several occasions visitors to Wiltshire have stated that sometimes mysterious glows of light appear around Ley Lines, also spontaneous flashes of light have been seen filling the landscape with light, almost like a lightening flash. Its reported as ley lines releasing bursts of energy upwards into the skies. Observations: • Crop circles often appear within 1–2 miles of ley line intersections. • Some formations seem to mirror the geometry of ley lines themselves — suggesting intentional placement or energetic influence. • UFO sightings often occur along ley lines, especially near ancient sites. • Balls of light and orbs — frequently reported near crop circles — are sometimes seen moving along ley paths, suggesting a navigational or energetic link.  One of the most frequently reported anomalies in Wiltshire and the surrounding counties is the Ball of Light phenomenon. Witnesses consistently describe these objects as spherical, roughly the size of a football or even a beach ball. They appear to move with purpose, often changing direction abruptly or hovering in place, despite showing no visible means of propulsion. Their behaviour has led many observers to conclude that they may be under some form of intelligent control. Reports vary in detail: sometimes the spheres appear as solid white objects with no visible glow, while at other times they flare brightly, emitting an intense white light. Their origin, nature, and method of movement remain unknown. No scientific explanation has yet accounted for their characteristics. Although sightings still occur today, they are far less common than they were during the peak years of crop circle activity. This decline may simply reflect a change in human behaviour — fewer people spending long nights on hilltops with cameras ready, waiting for something unusual to appear. Whether rare or frequent, the reports continue. And for those patient enough to watch the fields and ridgelines of Wiltshire, the Balls of Light are still said to be out there. After patiently waiting for many hours, French UFO enthusiast and crop circle researcher Pierre Beake finally succeeded in capturing the elusive orbs on camera in the Milk Hill area of Wiltshire. Here is another example - this time the balls of light are seen flaring their light into a bright glow. Exact location - time and date - is unknown.  Here's a photographic capture - giving visual size proportions in comparison to the crop circle itself. Again captured below Milk Hill A point of interest for the curious: in my previous post (HERE), a crop circle visitor/witness provided an artistic impression of a black‑skinned being holding a spherical object. It raises an intriguing possibility — perhaps these spheres are the very Balls of Light so often reported in Wiltshire. It would be unwise to dismiss the idea that such beings might use these luminous spheres to scout the landscape. Who knows; it remains a theory worth considering.
Intriguing isn't it ? Witness accounts claim that small dark skinned beings were seen in Wiltshire carrying sphere shaped objects.  24th July 2009 2009 stands out as one of the most active and widely reported years for unusual sightings and unexplained experiences across the UK, particularly in Wiltshire. Why this sudden surge occurred remains open to interpretation. Some researchers have suggested that the phenomenon may have reached a natural peak that year — a crescendo before the gradual decline in large‑scale formations that followed. Others speculate that 2009 acted as a kind of convergence point: multiple types of anomalous activity appearing within the same season, as if drawn to the heightened human interest, the record number of visitors, or the sheer density of formations. Whatever the cause, many who were present recall an atmosphere that felt unusually charged, as though the landscape itself was humming with intent. One of the more intriguing encounters of that summer took place at Smeathe’s Plantation near Ogbourne St. George, Wiltshire. A few days after a crop circle appeared there, researcher Andrew Pyrka and a colleague travelled to document the formation on 27 July 2009. Conditions were ideal — a warm, bright July afternoon, with nothing at first to suggest anything out of the ordinary. After completing their photographic expedition , they began packing their equipment. It was then that Andrew noticed a disturbance in a small copse overlooking the formation. A section of the trees appeared to shimmer or warp, as though viewed through a patch of unstable air. Andrew later described it as resembling the interference on an old analogue television set being tuned. As the distortion settled, a figure seemed to materialise in the exact spot. Andrew immediately raised his camera and captured several frames. The first image, unedited and taken at distance, shows nothing remarkable at a casual glance — yet when zoomed in, a pale figure appears to be standing among the trees, holding an object of indeterminate shape. At first nothing unusual is immediately visible but when you zoom into the almost centre you can see a strange being standing there and appears to be holding something.
Seeking a clearer shot, Andrew switched to a telephoto lens. But in the seconds it took to change lenses, the figure vanished. The entire incident lasted no more than two or three minutes. Its almost as if the being cottoned on to Andrew's intention.
For the purpose of transparency and clarity - I have added contrast and sharpness - nothing else has been added or altered in any way. That evening, Andrew uploaded the full set of images to me for review. One of the strengths of his approach was his willingness to have his material scrutinised — whether to confirm or debunk. In this case, the initial intriguing image did appear to show something anomalous: a pale, humanoid form holding what looked like a device or contraption. Before publishing anything, a deeper review of the remaining photographs was undertaken. Most were routine reference shots — pole and ground shots, and general landscape scenes. But one image stood out. In the upper left corner, partially concealed in the flattened crop, a small dark‑skinned figure with large black eyes appeared to be crouching. It was subtle enough to have been overlooked entirely, and yet once seen, impossible to ignore..  The original photo I urged Andrew to check thoroughly. Photo at this stage is as taken - not edited in any way. While still on the phone, Andrew opened the photo in question and began scanning every inch of it. Then came a sudden, absolute silence. Not a breath, not a word. “Bloody hell, Mike…” he finally muttered. There, in the very top left of the image, a small dark‑skinned being with black, unblinking eyes appeared to be crouching in the flattened section of the crop circle. A detail so subtle, so easily overlooked, it had almost slipped into the archives unnoticed — its significance hidden in plain sight.  Again for the purpose of clarity and transparency - the unedited zoomed in section showing the small black figure crouching in one of the avenues of the crop circle.  'Fellow researcher Robert Martins, who sometimes works alongside Andy Pyrka in the hotspot areas in Wiltshire enhanced the original photo to attain further visual clarity to what appears to be a small figure that is already in the photo. Another photograph from the same sequence captured a familiar feature of Wiltshire formations: a white orb hovering quietly between two trees, later seen moving away across the neighbouring fields. Such orbs have been reported for decades, often described as silent, self‑directed spheres of light.

When the site was visited by myself several days later, additional independent accounts emerged. Tourists reported sightings of small dark beings similar to the figure in the photograph, and one visitor described seeing what resembled a mechanical bird moving above and on the ground of the formation. No images were captured of these later claims, though some witnesses provided artistic impressions of the small dark skinned beings.

As stated by witness crop circle photographer Steve Alexander ..... On July 29th 1990, I filmed a ball of light close to two crop circles near to Milk Hill in Wiltshire. This was the first time that a ball of light had been filmed close to crop circles. The ball of light came into view and dropped into the crop. At the time I thought it might be a bird or a balloon, or something else mundane. But it became clear after a while that it was something more bizarre! The light moved through the crop flashing and glinting (like sunlight reflecting off of tin foil) The light at times was very intense! Eventually the light took off and flew towards a tractor driver in the distance. As the ball of light flew over the tractor, the tractor stopped. Eventually the ball of light went off into the distance. The tractor driver was interviewed about five months after the incident, and he said he remembered that day, and the ball of light which he saw fly over him. He said that it was as big as a beach ball and was glinting and flashing! He said that he does remember that the engine stopped as the light went over the tractor. At the time of the incident he did hot know that I was filming from my vantage point on Milk Hill. When he informed his boss at the farm, and his friends of what he saw , he was not taken seriously and was laughed at. When the film of the event was put out to the public, it confirmed that he had indeed seen something that was very strange indeed. Since that day many people have filmed similar objects in and around crop circles. I filmed another one in 2009, which shot into the floor lay of the formation at Morgan's Hill in Wiltshire. What these objects are is still unknown. They seem to move with propose, and seem to have some kind of intelligence. Some people believe that they are connected to the creation of the crop circles. I think there is a connection, but what it is seems unclear. If these balls of light do not make crop circles, then they do seem attracted to them for whatever reason. Steve Alexander
Prelude to the Unknown On the night of July 30th, 1994, the stars over Wiltshire hung unusually low, as if the cosmos itself leaned in to witness something extraordinary. Silbury Hill—Europe’s largest man-made prehistoric mound—stood like a sentinel of forgotten ages, its silhouette etched against the velvet sky. The wheat fields shimmered with moonlight, and the air pulsed with a quiet expectancy. Three seekers—Paul Baugley, Sonya Bailey, and a colleague—ascended the ancient hilltop for a night of sky-watching. They weren’t alone. A small group of teenagers and two friends had already gathered, drawn by the same magnetic curiosity. But as the friends departed for a global meditation event in nearby Avebury, something shifted. ( Did the global meditation have an influence?) The Descent of the Fog From Avebury’s direction, a dense fog rolled in—not across the landscape, but around the hill itself. Silbury was suddenly isolated, suspended above a sea of mist. The surrounding countryside remained clear, amplifying the surreal effect. Then came the sound: footsteps on the steep slope. Peering over the edge, the trio saw small, dark silhouettes, childlike in form, climbing toward them. (seemingly having never reached the top ) The Arrival of the Lights Their attention was drawn to West Kennet Long Barrow, where an orange orb of light appeared—then another. A pungent smell of burning rubber filled the air. At 1:00 AM, the bells of St. James’s Church rang out, followed by distant barking dogs. The lights began to move, gliding toward the A4 layby, just over 150 yards away. Sonya aimed a cycle lamp at the lights, but the beam obscured their vision. When switched off, the lights froze mid-motion, as if aware they’d been spotted. What emerged was no ordinary sight: two translucent, three-sided pyramids, pulsing with light. Inside, small humanoid figures knelt or sat, glowing faintly orange. The Close Encounter The pyramids lifted into the air, their glow reflecting off nearby trees. They hovered 15–20 feet from the witnesses. Time slowed. Sonya reached out instinctively. Paul described the air as charged with static electricity, audible and tangible. Strangely, the teenagers on the hill lay in unnatural sleep, covered in what looked like black bin liners. Then, without warning, the pyramids erupted in silent light, returning to the layby and merging into a single orb. It moved into a nearby field, disturbing a cow. From this orb, two glowing humanoid figures emerged, holding hands, suspended in air. Moments later, they returned to the light. 
The Vanishing Point The orb glided along the A4 toward Marlborough, casting an orange glow. An approaching vehicle seemed destined to collide with it—until the orb shrunk to the size of a tennis ball and vanished into a hedgerow. The driver, curious, approached the witnesses. Before explanations could be offered, the ball re-emerged, entered a field east of Silbury, and vanished again. Then, in the field south of the hill, a line of coloured lights—white, blue, orange, red—rose skyward, disappearing over the southwestern horizon. Time Distorted The ambient sounds of the night returned. The group checked the time: 3:15 AM. Over two hours had passed, yet it felt like 15 minutes. The teenagers awoke, unaware of anything, and left silently at dawn. The witnesses remained, trying to make sense of what had transpired. A Message from Beyond? What Paul, Sonya, and their colleague experienced was deeply personal—a chosen encounter, perhaps. The beings seemed to understand their intent: to seek, to discover, to be enlightened. It was a silent communion, a reward for their courage and curiosity. Whether by chance or cosmic design, they were shown that we are not alone. This event, now part of Wiltshire’s living folklore, must never be forgotten. It is a historical encounter, a beacon for those who dare to look beyond the veil. In the vastness of space, something reached out—and three humans reached back.
Across the decades of the crop circle phenomenon, one question has surfaced again and again—quietly at first, then with growing insistence: were circle makers and even long‑time researchers experiencing some form of paranormal influence? It was never a theory that could be dismissed outright. Human beings are, after all, electrical organisms. Our brains generate measurable electromagnetic fields; our thoughts are patterns of energy. It is not scientifically impossible—only unproven—that one person deeply focused on an idea might influence another who is similarly receptive. And in Wiltshire, during the height of the phenomenon, this idea wasn’t just speculation. It was lived experience. Meditation, Intention, and the “Miracle” Designs Throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, many crop‑circle enthusiasts reported meditating—alone or in groups—while visualising specific designs. On more than one occasion, a formation resembling their mental image appeared the very next morning. For those who witnessed such coincidences, the effect was profound. It strengthened the belief that something unseen was intercepting human thought and manifesting it physically in the fields. Whether interpreted as extraterrestrial intelligence, interdimensional entities, or a collective consciousness, the conclusion felt inescapable to them: “If this happened to you, how could you not believe?” Influence Through Human Hands But another theory emerged—one that felt, to many, even more plausible. If non‑physical entities could not directly create a physical formation, what would stop them from working through human circle makers? Over the years, several experienced makers reported moments of inspiration that felt external—ideas arriving fully formed, or sudden impulses to alter a design mid‑construction. Later, those spontaneous additions often turned out to be symbolically significant to researchers, as if the maker had unknowingly inserted a coded message. One of the most striking examples came from circle maker Terry Roderick, who openly claimed that his creative impulses were influenced by the Nephilim—the mysterious beings described in ancient texts such as the Book of Enoch. Whether taken literally or metaphorically, Terry’s formations were undeniably unusual, often complex beyond what observers expected from a single human working at night.
Protection, Fog, and the Sense of Being Watched Another recurring theme among makers was the feeling of being protected. Some described sudden banks of mist rolling in just when they needed cover from early‑rising farmers or dog walkers. Others spoke of time seeming to “stretch,” allowing them to complete intricate work before dawn. These accounts were not isolated. Reports of shadowy figures, strange lights, or the sense of an unseen presence watching from the field margins were surprisingly common. Even sceptics admitted that the sheer volume of such testimonies was difficult to ignore. A Personal Encounter With the Unexplained My own experience added another layer to this puzzle. After spending an entire day designing a complex formation—one I intended to attempt myself—I was stunned to discover that almost the exact same design appeared in a Wiltshire wheat field the very next morning. No one had seen my sketch. The odds of such a precise match occurring by chance were astronomical. When I contacted the usual circle‑making suspects, I learned that the formation had been created by none other than Terry Roderick. I drove down to meet him, design in hand. Terry wasn’t surprised. If anything, he reacted as though such synchronicities were simply part of the landscape. Another circle maker standing nearby offered a comment that has stayed with me ever since: “The things out there liked your design, but they knew you weren’t ready to make it, it was beyond your capabilities. So they passed it to someone who was and could.” It was a humbling moment—but also strangely affirming. The design existed. The idea had travelled. And whether the mechanism was telepathy, intuition, or something far stranger, the connection felt real. The Wiltshire Effect During the peak years, many people—makers, researchers, and visitors alike—felt that Wiltshire possessed a kind of heightened consciousness. Ideas seemed to move between people. Coincidences multiplied. Designs appeared that mirrored private thoughts, dreams, or meditations. Was it telepathy? Collective creativity? A field of consciousness? Or something else entirely? No one can say with certainty. But those who lived through that era know one thing: the phenomenon was more than flattened wheat. It was an experience—shared, transmitted, and felt. Design Preparation Before entering the field: Produce a scaled drawing of the intended formation. Use consistent units (e.g., inches for planning, metres for field execution). Verify that the primary circle radius can accommodate all internal elements. Assign a design lead to prevent conflicting instructions during construction, Avoid improvisation; it reduces accuracy and increases time spent in the field. 4. Skill Development Conduct practice sessions in a grass meadow to develop the following techniques: Planking: maintaining balance while applying downward pressure. Rope handling: controlling tension and movement while walking in arcs. Human compass method: one person anchors the centre while another traces the circumference. Practising these skills improves precision and reduces errors during the actual build. 5. Field Procedure. When operating in the field: Identify entry and exit routes before starting. Review visibility lines from roads, footpaths, and nearby properties. Maintain low noise levels throughout the process. If working at night, use minimal lighting and maintain situational awareness. After completion, deploy a drone to capture overhead imagery. When sharing results online, avoid disclosing operational details. 6. Required Equipment. When he approached them, he heard a strange “static electricity” sound, and the figures ran away “faster than any man he had ever seen”. This remains one of the most widely reported and unusual modern crop‑circle‑related encounters. What Did He See? According to the reports: The Figures • Three beings • Over 6 feet tall • Blond hair • Wearing white coverall‑type suits Their Behaviour • They appeared to be inspecting the crop inside the formation • When the officer approached, he heard a loud static‑electricity sound. He shouted to the figures who at first ignored him, not glancing at him. • The beings ran away at an impossible speed, far faster than a human could run The officer was reportedly shaken by the experience. What Happened Next? Related Sightings Around the same period, other witnesses reported unusual lights near Silbury Hill, including: • A fast‑moving light that appeared to stretch or distort as it moved across the sky Silbury Hill has a long history of such reports, which is why some researchers refer to the area as a “hotspot” or even a “stargate.” The Challenge Not everyone accepted the policeman’s account without question. Two seasoned crop‑circle chasers, who were night‑watching the Silbury Hill area that same morning, later challenged the authenticity of the alleged encounter. They reported that they had been parked in the Silbury Hill car park during the approximate window in which the event was said to have occurred—and yet they witnessed nothing unusual at all. However, once the dust settled, even they acknowledged a crucial caveat: no precise time was ever given for the officer’s sighting. Without an exact timestamp, their testimony could neither confirm nor rule out the event. The encounter may have unfolded minutes before they arrived, or moments after they left. In the absence of precise timing, the question remains suspended in that familiar crop‑circle limbo—possible, plausible, but forever unverified. A Final Reflection ( applies to all encounters out there ) The important thing to remember is that a personal experience—especially one as extraordinary as this—ultimately belongs to the individual who lived it. If the policeman’s account is genuine, then it becomes one of those rare moments that stays with a person for life: unsettling, unforgettable, and forever prompting the question of what he truly witnessed that morning. Some encounters never resolve into certainty; they simply linger, shaping the quiet edges of a person’s belief.  The Strange, Sticky World of Crop Circle Copyright For decades, crop circles floated in a legal grey zone as mysterious as their origins. Because no human authorship was publicly claimed, the designs were effectively treated as ownerless. And in copyright law, if no creator steps forward, no copyright exists. This vacuum created a free‑for‑all. By the mid‑1990s, the crop circle boom had spawned an entire cottage industry: jewellery etched with sacred geometry, mugs printed with the latest Wiltshire mandala, T‑shirts, posters, badges, stickers—if it could be printed on, someone printed on it. Glastonbury shops were full of them. Tourists snapped them up. No one asked permission because, officially, there was no one to ask. Photography: The One Thing That Could Be Owned While the designs themselves floated in legal limbo, photography was another matter entirely. Aerial photographers—who once had to hire helicopters or light aircraft at considerable cost—could copyright their images. In the 1980s and 1990s, a single helicopter flight over Wiltshire could cost hundreds of pounds. Photographers like Steve Alexander and others built entire careers on capturing formations from above, and their images were protected as artistic works. Today, drones have democratised the process. Anyone can fly a drone over a formation and upload footage to YouTube within minutes. But the law hasn’t changed: If you sell aerial images, you need a commercial licence—regardless of whether you used a drone, a helicopter, or a hot‑air balloon. There was even a notorious loophole: Some pilots offered “trial flying lessons” instead of “aerial photography flights.” You weren’t paying to photograph crop circles—you were learning to fly, and just happened to take photos while doing so. Civil aviation authorities were not amused, but the loophole existed long enough to become folklore. Commissioned Circles: A Different Beast Entirely When companies commissioned crop circles for advertising—Nike, Weetabix, Greenpeace, and others—the designs were automatically copyrighted. These were corporate assets, not mysteries. Of course, a few still slipped into the wild and ended up on merchandise. Opportunists rarely checked whether a formation was a corporate commission or a “genuine” mystery. The Circlemakers’ Dilemma: Claim Nothing, Own Nothing For the underground artists who actually made many of the formations, copyright was a trap. If a circle maker publicly claimed a design, they risked: • trespass charges • criminal damage claims • civil liability for crop loss So the safest option was silence. By staying anonymous, they protected themselves—and kept the myth alive. The unspoken rule was simple: Circle makers create. The public exploits. No one complains. That uneasy balance held for years. Then Came Dene Hine Everything changed when circle maker Dene Hine broke the silence. He began challenging online sellers who were profiting from designs he had created. For the first time, a circle maker wasn’t hiding—he was asserting ownership. Facebook takedowns followed. Merch sellers panicked. Some had warehouses full of printed T‑shirts suddenly rendered legally radioactive. The shockwave was enormous. If one circle maker could prove authorship, then theoretically any circle maker could. The old “aliens made it, so it’s free to use” argument suddenly looked flimsy. The Jewellery Fallout Researcher Janet Ossebaard, known for her beautifully crafted crop circle jewellery, felt the impact immediately. Her online shop vanished almost overnight. Products were pulled. It wasn’t just Janet at risk—the artisans who physically made the jewellery were exposed too. A single copyright claim could ripple through the entire supply chain. The Hard Lesson If you intend to profit from a design, you must either: • seek permission, if the designer is known • or avoid using it entirely Even if a design appears “unclaimed,” someone created it. And that someone may one day step forward with proof. It’s Not Just Designs—Written Work Is Vulnerable Too The crop circle world has seen copyright battles over text as well. Lucy Pringle accused Janet Ossebaard of copying written material for one of her books. The result? Janet could no longer sell the book and ended up giving it away for free. In a field built on mystery, copyright has become one of the few things that isn’t ambiguous. |
